The establishment of the company was in accordance with Cabinet Decision No. 198/33 dated July 26, 1993 and was in keeping with the Ministry of Health’s process of decentralizing certain of its functions with a view to creating a strong, viable and effective drug supply system to meet the nation’s health care needs.

To this end, the procurement, customs clearance, warehousing and distribution functions of the Jamaica Commodity Trading Company’s (JCTC) Pharmaceutical Division, the Supply Division and the Island Medical Stores were placed under one umbrella, Health Corporation Limited, to streamline the supply of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to public sector hospitals and health departments.

The company began operations on June 1, 1994 with a staff complement of 43 persons at the Marcus Garvey Drive facility formerly occupied by the Island Medical Stores.
