Dr. Michael Whittingham, Veterinary Surgeon was born in Nottingham, England to Jamaican parents on May 9, 1963.

He completed his secondary education at Munro College and in 1983 was the recipient of a government scholarship to study veterinary medicine in Hungary. In 1984 he completed his preparatory year at the International Preparatory Institute in Budapest, earning a diploma in Hungarian language with distinction.

He went on to the University of Veterinary Science in Budapest, Hungary where in 1989 he graduated as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) summa cum laude.

During his tender years he sought to identify with his Jamaican roots and vowed early in his life that Jamaica would eventually be home. On returning to Jamaica in 1990 he set up residence in Brown's Town, St. Ann. He immediately became involved in community affairs and has since demonstrated a deep interest in rural development and community empowerment.

He worked with the Ministry of Agriculture as Parish Veterinary Officer for the parish of Trelawny, from March 1990 to September 1992 when all clinical veterinary services were divested to the veterinarians.

Dr. Whittingham now operates two Veterinary Clinics, one in Brown's Town, St. Ann, the other in Falmouth, Trelawny. He is also the local Veterinary Inspector for Trelawny. In addition to pet practice, his work takes him into the hills and valleys of St. Ann and Trelawny to attend to large animals for both small and large farmers.
Dr. Whittingham is a member of a number of Associations and Boards. He recently demitted office as President of the Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association; a position he held for six consecutive years. He has been a member of the Jamaica Veterinary Board since 1997 and is also a member of the Parish Executive of the Jamaica Agricultural Society St. Ann Association of Branch Societies.

In 1998 when Jamaica decided to eradicate the dreaded screwworm pest which incidentally affects both man and beast, Dr. Whittingham was asked to serve on the International Steering Committee for the National Screwworm Eradication Programme.

He sits on the Board of Management of St. Hilda's Diocesan High School and the Brown’s Town High School. In March 2004 he was appointed as Chairman of the North Eastern Regional Health Authority, giving him overall responsibility for the provision of Public Sector health-care in the Parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland. In 2000 he was nominated by the People's National Party (PNP) to represent the Party on the National Council on Education and was recently asked to serve another three-year term on this body. This council is mandated, among other things, to recommend policy relating to education in Jamaica.

Dr. Whittingham is committed to putting dignity and integrity back into Jamaican politics and served as Chairman of the PNP’s Region 1 (St. Ann and Trelawny), for two years between August 2003 and August 2005. He is the current Constituency Chairman of St. Ann North Western and is in his sixth year as a member of the People’s National Party’s National Executive Council.

An avid fan of outdoor sports and “retired footballer”, for additional recreation he operates a thirty acre coffee farm nestled in the Dry Harbour Mountains.

Dr. Whittingham is divorced with two sons and a daughter.
